Okay, so I don't know everything about raving, I have never claimed to, nor do I think I ever will.  But I do know the basics and maybe a little extra.  So here are a few topics you might find of interest if you've never been to a shindig before.

Okay, so I don't know everything about raving, I have never claimed to, nor do I think I ever will.  But I do know the basics and maybe a little extra.  So here are a few topics you might find of interest if you've never been to a shindig before.

WHAT'S IN A RAVER'S BAG

Different Ravers carry different things depending on their party style.  I'm ususally prepared for any situation so I will give you a list of things I keep in my bag:

Money-  You need it to get in, for water and goodies if the party thrower is charging (which is bogus if they are), and for any substance that  you may feel you need in order to have a good time.

I.D.-  For some reason, some parties require you to be over 16.

Vicks Inhaler-  More commonly referred to by Ravers as a Sea Breeze.

Vicks VapoRub-  Just inhaling it feels good.  Especially when you're on E.

Particle Mask-  E-Mask, you put your Vicks VapoRub in it and just breath.

Mini Massager-  Who doesn't like a massage any way?

Stuffed Animal-  E-Babies, I generally carry about 6 with me.

Blinky Stuff-  Um, it's dark, and the brighter your flashies the better. Glow sticks are great too.

Stickers-  Everyone loves stickers

Glitter-  Go glitter someone.  Glitter is happy!

Pen and Notebook-  I like to refer to it as an E-Book.  All my Raver pals sign it and give me their digits, e-mail addies, etc.

Suckers-  Yes, these are a seperate food group!  Suckers are yummy, and they help you avoid lock jaw.

Binky-  Pacifier.  These things are addictive whether you are rolling or not.

Comb-  Brush, pick, whatever.

Hair ties-  or clipies cause my hair's too short.

Chapstick-  Sucking on Binkies and Suckers all night will give you chapped lips.

First Aid Kit-  At least a couple of Band-Aids ppl.
Ecstacy

Not all ravers do ecstacy.  Besides, the scene is about the music, not the drugs.  Any way, here's a little tidbit about E that I found at the Crew2000 site.  If you want more info check the links page.

Other Names:  E, X
First Produced early 20th century.  The 2nd most popular drug of choice, after alcohol, for clubbers.
Short term effects:  Feelings of well being, empathy towards others, and a loss of inhibitions
Long term effects:  Little is known about the long term effects of this drug, with prolonged use it may lead to depression, and increased susceptibility to minor ailments such as cold, flu, and sore throats.
Safer use:  Avoid buying E in a nightclub setting, as you will never know what it is.  Try and score from someone you know, look out for test results, these may give you a rough guide as to what is in the pill you score....  If you have hypertension, heart problems, epilepsy, asthma, are pregnant or on anti-depressants avoid using this drug.
Taking it:  Small white or speckled tablets (often with a pattern), gelatin capsules, sometimes a powder.

Music

Music is what this scene is all about!  Not all ravers listen to the same kinds of mucic, but the style of music played at raves is techno.  According to one kewl kid, Roches,  "Techno, is a style that emerged mostly from detroit in the early 80's.  It's one of the few genres that has a clear beginning and inventor: Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May. "Techno" comes from "techno rebels" in a book, "Future Shock".  Neat innit?" Here are a few of those types and their basic identifiable characteristics.

House:  Sounds kinda like disco
Happy Hardcore:  It's the fast dancable kind, very happy sounding, often with piano or vocals
D&B:  Drum and Bass, fast drum beats and deep bass lines, self explanitory
Trance:  layers of repetitive sound with long riffs of melody, forming complex musical patterns, very hypnotic and relaxing
Ambiant:  No real form to it, free flowing, one of my favorites
Old School:  the original, very underground, very experimental music of the early raves in the UK, about 1990-1994.
Suggested listening:  DJ Irene, Happy  2 B Hardcore 1,2,3,4, 5, and 6, Carl Cox, Groove Soundtrack.
